The family name of Coltrane is said to have originated from the village of Culrain in Rosshire, Scotland. Three progenitors of the founder of the American branch of the family are known by records in Scotland. Patrick Coltrane, great grandfather of David Coltrane, the first of the family to migrate to America, was provost of Wigton and had seizin of the lands of Airlies on December 4, 1663. These lands were in the parish of Kirkinmer in Galloway, Southwestern Scotland.
