Jacob Hammons, a 56 year old shoemaker, was living with his wife, Mary, 45, and children, Caroline, 17, Crawford, 16, Frances, 13, Martha, 12, Jackson, 8, Jasper, 6, Newton, 6, and Delia Ann, 4, in Neshoba County, Mississippi. He was born in Georgia, his wife in South Carolina. The first four children were born in Alabama and the last four in Mississippi. They moved from Alabama between 1838 and 1842 according to the birth places of the children. The family is living next door to their son, William, a 23 year old farmer, and his wife, Mary, 18, and one month old daughter.
