The first cotton gin was put up on a lot across the old Highway 65 from Clomer Gooden's home and was run by Fletcher Hawkins. This gin processed its first bale of cotton in the fall of 1890. There was already on this lot a brick kiln, operated by E.M. Brown and his brother-in-law, Greenbrier Scarbrough. Early settlers bought brick for their new homes, but it was soon discovered that the clay here was not of the type for making good brick and the kiln was soon abandoned.

His son, George P., 19, and his wife, Mary S., 20, and their child, Marine J., 1, were also living in the household. Adolphus, Fredrick, and George P. were farm laborers. Thomas was born in South Carolina and Celiah in Georgia and all the children in Mississippi.
